Why you need blue-blockers

 In order to understand why someone NEEDS to wear blue blockers at night, we have to understand the role that certain wavelengths of have on our biology. Not all light is created equal, and the wrong light at the wrong time is proven to be dangerous for our health. We cannot stress the importance of having to take control of your “light environment”. In the same way we all understand that GMO’s, pesticides and artificial food is toxic for our health, man-made, artificial light is as well. This is proven across many different studies which you can find in the “Resource” section of our website. 

 

     The truth is, our body does not discriminate between the light that gives us energy and heals us (the sun), and the artificial light we sit underneath and in front of for hours every evening (lightbulbs, fluorescent lights, TV, computer, hand held devices, etc). Every type of light sends a signal to our biology, and major aspects of our biology are controlled by certain types of lights... 

 

     For example, we all know it is sunlight (UV-B) which creates vitamin D. Without vitamin D we would become very ill and susceptible to a wide variety of diseases. It is also becoming more well known that the infrared (and red) light from the sun is what creates energy within our cells, which improves cellular function and performance. This is where it gets more interesting… What about BLUE LIGHT?..Well, blue light has an extremely important role in setting our circadian rhythm. Our circadian rhythm is a timed system of biological events controlled by light and darkness. This 24 hour rhythm is what controls the release and balance of certain hormones, sleep, alertness, the digestive processes, our sense of wellbeing, body temperature, and so much more... 

 

     It is bright blue light that is irradiated from morning sunlight that stops the secretion of melatonin (our sleep hormone), releases insulin, and increases our alertness while releasing dopamine. This is the best time to be bathed in blue light. Perhaps the most important piece of the equation here is that blue light stops melatonin secretion. When does this become a bad thing?..This becomes a disaster for our health when we stay up much later after sunset under artificial light for hours with our TVs, phones, tablets, and computers. Remember, our body does not discriminate between sunlight or artificial light. The important thing to understand here is that most, if not all forms of modern day artificial lighting and electronic LED devices (phones, computers, etc…) emit large amounts of blue light! When we expose ourselves to these devices and lights for hours at a time we stop the secretion of melatonin, disrupt our circadian rhythm, create hormonal imbalances, release insulin at inappropriate times, and create an excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS) linking excessive blue light exposure to brain inflammation, obesity, diabetes, poor sleep, and weak immune function. 

 

     This is all caused from the wrong light at the wrong time. This is why if we want to be truly health conscious but also enjoy our evening activities and modern technology, we MUST invest in a pair of blue blocking glasses in order to protect our circadian rhythm. This is just as important as eating organic. In fact, what good is access to all the health food in the world if we are still creating major disruptions in our circadian rhythm due to blue light toxicity? The most important number to look for when finding a pair of blue blockers that actually works is 550nm.The visible light spectrum, or what we know as the colors of the rainbow (R,O,Y,G,B,I,V) is a scale from about 380nm to 740nm. To block blue light effectively and protect your circadian rhythm you're going to want to block all wavelengths of light up to 550nm after sunset. This means all light between 380nm and 550nm must be blocked.. These are the wavelengths which most artificial lights and LED screens (phones, TVs, computers) emit. This is why most clear lensed and yellow tinted blue blocking glasses can ONLY help indoor daytime exposure to artificial blue, but they are INEFFECTIVE after sunset...
